Development of a Tree-Ring Chronology from Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginia, L.) for the Upper Mississippi River Valley

چکیده
Dendrochronology is the science that uses tree-rings dated to their exact year of formation to analyze temporal and spatial patterns of processes in the physical and cultural sciences. There currently is no published record for tree-ring studies using Eastern Red Cedar in the Upper Mississippi River Valley in Wisconsin. Therefore, this study develops a chronology from treerings using Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana, L.). The objectives of this study were to collect samples from both live and dead trees and to create a tree-ring chronology based on standard dendrochronological methods including skeleton plotting and cross-dating. Creating a master chronology makes this study significant because it adds to the knowledge of tree-rings for western Wisconsin and has the potential to be used for further work in dendroclimatology to assess past climate change for the Upper Mississippi River Valley.

Evidence of recovery of Juniperus virginiana trees from sulfur pollution after the Clean Air Act.
Using dendroisotopic techniques, we show the recovery of Juniperus virginiana L. (eastern red cedar) trees in the Central Appalachian Mountains from decades of acidic pollution. Acid deposition over much of the 20th century reduced stomatal conductance of leaves, thereby increasing intrinsic water-use efficiency of the Juniperus trees. These data indicate that the stomata of Juniperus may be mo...

Tree-ring data from Chamaecyparis lawsoniana (A. Murr.) Parl. (Port Orford cedar; Cupressaceae) were used to create a standardized chronology, assess the local, limiting factors on radial growth, and investigate the extent of a unique climatic event. We produced a 580-year tree-ring chronology (A.D. 1420 to 2000) from a large number of cedars (n 5 1537) sampled in one 37 km2 area in the Siskiyo...
متن کاملEffect of Eastern Red Cedar on Seedling Establishment of Prairie Plants
To test the hypothesis that eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana L.) is allelopathic, seedling establishment of five herbaceous prairie species was evaluated by growing seeds in soil collected beneath and adjacent to a stand ofthis tree species. While four species showed no significant effect, the gennination of one species, finger coreopsis (Coreopsis pa/mata Nutt.), was significantly reduc...
متن کاملThe Effects of Climate on Radial Growth of Disjunct Northern White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis L.) in Virginia
Understanding the geographic range and growth of species is essential for effective land management in a landscape affected by anthropogenic activity and climate change. Climate change is expected to alter the distribution and growth of many tree species in eastern North America, including northern white cedar (Thuja occidentalis L.). This research examined the effects of climate on radial grow...

Climate-related environmental and humanitarian crisis are important challenges in the Great Horn of Africa (GHA). In the absence of long-term past climate records in the region, tree-rings are valuable climate proxies, reflecting past climate variations and complementing climate records prior to the instrumental era. We established annually resolved multi-century tree-ring chronology from Junip...
